As the smoke from SXSW clears, we are left remembering our Films for the Forest festival. Each year Rainforest Partnership joins forces with SXSW Community Screenings to host our annual “Films for the Forest” event; an international film festival committed to telling the stories of our environment while advocating for its protection.
We have received submissions from across the globe with entrants ranging from experienced filmmakers to aspiring students. Our judges are just as impressive: Rick Linklater, Ginger Sledge, and Dilly Gents. This year, their task in judging our film submission was not easy. After receiving many worthy films, our renowned judges chose their picks:
The Arborist - Joe Fellows - UK
Trees - Gal Ziv - Israel
The Laboratory With Leaves - Daniel Nils Roberts - UK
Make a Stand - Marcus Marshall - Trinidad & Tobago
Sticky - Jilli Rose - Australia
Black Rock Creek - Malone Lumarda - USA
Monkey Business - Hart Elementary

Our venue this year, the Marchesa Hall & Theater, was the perfect place for the event. As an Austin Film Society and SXSW venue, the Marchesa’s vintage Hollywood ambiance added to an exceptional evening.
The evening began with a delicious spread of Mediterranean food from our local eatery, Phara’s Mediterranean Cafe, and Yerbucha cocktails from our favorite brewery, Holy Kombucha.

Niyanta and past judge Elizabeth Avellán. You may know her as the mastermind behind the "Spy Kids" films.
As the films started, audiences trickled in to view the judge’s choices for best film submissions. The best part of the evening? A Q&A session with the talented filmmakers from Garner Fine Arts Academy. Here is a picture of Niyanta and Liz with them (handsome, right?):
