The Kichwa arts and crafts project is flying along. Originally, the studio had a scheduled completion date near Christmas. However, the hard work of the entire community; their community-owned ecolodge, the Sani Lodge; our partner organization Conservacion y Desarollo and project manager Yessica Gualinga, has paid off enormously and the studio should be done by the end of next week, five months ahead of schedule!

From the beginning, the construction of the studio presented a challenge, because the materials needed to be transported across the river, a very difficult and time-consuming task. The community found a local contractor and used local materials to construct the typical Kichwa structure.

The next construction phase will involve the community selecting a plot of land to build nurseries, however construction must wait until August or September, when it is the proper season to germinate and grow the seeds.

The women of Sani Isla are very enthusiastic about the project and are proud of the studio where they can make products, sell products and build relationships with each other and the visiting patrons!
