Rainforest Partnership

REDD and RP

As an organization focused on protecting tropical rainforest while engaging with and enhancing the lives of indigenous peoples, Rainforest Partnership has the potential to benefit greatly from an international REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) or REDD+ agreement.  Our successful project in Chipaota is a perfect example of the types of projects REDD+ (commonly referred to as REDD), would fund; projects that make it financially viable for those that live in the forest to keep their trees standing rather than cut down.

At COP15 in December 2009 it became clear that a REDD mechanism will be included in any future international climate change agreements, which could mean access to significant government and private funding for RP’s future projects.  Even outside of an official REDD agreement, some countries have agreed to begin donating to a Green Climate Fund which is expected to accumulate $30 billion over the next 3 years for climate change mitigation activities, with an estimated 20% going to forest preservation.

Rainforest Partnership is the only Texas-based nonprofit focused on reducing tropical forestation and raising awareness about its effects on global climate change, and thus we want to serve as a resource for those hoping to learn more or become more involved in international forest conservation issues.  Stay tuned for in-depth analysis of REDD’s history, current status, and carbon markets.
