About Us: Rainforest Partnership (RP) is an Austin-based nonprofit working on preservation of tropical rainforests. We do this by working with Latin American rainforest communities in supporting sustainable means of earning an income that makes it more valuable for our partner communities to keep their forests standing.
About Chipaota: A year ago, Chipaota’s 23 square-mile community-owned forest in the Peruvian Amazon Basin was in danger from unsustainable uses and cutting of trees. The main source of income for this indigenous community was fiber from the piassaba palm, used for making brooms. Rainforest Partnership worked with the residents to develop a new way to manage the forest, allowing them to harvest more fibers without damaging or cutting the trees and conserving almost 9,000 acres (14 square miles) of their forest. Today, the residents make more money through a business that RP helped create and the forest is protected.
