Many people have asked me why Rainforest Partnership is not working in Brazil. While we would certainly like to have projects there in the future, the difficulty of navigating the large country combined with the lack of proper land titles — as illustrated in this article from today’s New York Times — makes the possibility of a good Rainforest Partnership project something that will have to wait. A key aspect of our success in Chipaota, Peru, is that our partner community has a title and owns the land, as well as being recognized by the federal government as a native community, with the rights that entails.
