The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is currently hosting the 16th Conference of Parties (COP) in Cancun, Mexico. Both Maurine and Niyanta were present in Copenhagen last year for the conferences surrounding COP15 where little progress was made on establishing an agreement to address global climate change mitigation. What came out of the Conference was the Copenhagen Accord which set weak, non-binding emissions reductions goals for developed countries. However, the Copenhagen Accord did state the importance of REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) and promised emergency funding which would go to developing countries to help them prepare for climate change.
This year’s meeting, COP 16, is being held in Cancun, Mexico and one of the few items expected to come out of the conference is an agreement on protecting tropical forests, or REDD. Niyanta and Maurine will be attending ancillary conferences to COP16 such as Forest Day 4, the World Climate Summit, Global Business Day and Green Solutions at COP16. We will be heading down this weekend and we will keep everyone up to speed with developments over the course of COP16 with a specific focus on negotiations surrounding forests. Hasta luego amigos!
