Our fundraiser at the Belmont

Great evening for Rainforest Partnership on Wednesday Feb 11 at the Belmont on 6th Street.  This was our first public fundraising event.  Thanks to everyone who came and donated to our cause. We were greatly aided by Matt Curtis who gave advice and helped put together the list of 20 hosts, and by Barbara Garza who volunteered to coordinate the event.  Mayor Will Wynn, our Honorary Host, gave a brief speech to the 130 plus guests, encouraging Rainforest Partnership in its mission and saying how pleased he is that RP is an Austin based organization working on deforestation and climate change. We were entertained by Chale Rangel from Los Escondidos and the Bouldin Creek Bobcats, all of whom donated their time and talent to our event.   They were great. The event netted just over $2,000 for our project in Chipaota, Peru.   Add the fact that we were able to raise awareness about RP with lots of new people and I rate the event a great success – and a number of people have already asked us when our next event will be!If you weren’t able to attend or were unable to make a contribution to Rainforest Partnership at the event and would like to donate now, please click here.

Spreading the Word

The past week was full of a great deal of activity at Rainforest Partnership. On Thursday, our first sponsor, the Home Spa, held a small fundraiser for us. Thank you so much to Home Spa owner Rebecca Lightfoot for her interest and participation. Not only has she opened up her business for a reception in our honor, she has also committed to donating 2% of any sales of the Somina mattress, an environmentally-friendly alternative to regular mattresses containing a soy filler, to Rainforest Partnership. The following night was a fundraiser at the lovely South Austin home of Brad Rockwell and Nina Fantl. Our hosts prepared a South American cocktail party complete with pisco sours and chicha morada (two Peruvian beverages). We had a very nice turnout and Niyanta generated a lot of excitement with her story of our founding as a non-profit organization and recounting her experiences during the five months she traveled in Latin America. Thank you to Brad and Nina for hosting a terrific gathering; I look forward to their continued participation. We are making excellent progress on our fundraising goal of $30,000 before year’s end, but there is still a long way to go. Please tell all your friends to visit us and contribute. This is a great opportunity to squeeze in one more tax-deductible contribution before the end of the tax year. And all the money you contribute will go directly to our first project in Mushuk Llacta de Chipaota. Please help us make a difference not only in the lives of this small community’s members, but in the fight to curtail global climate change.
